Tonight, inside Kode 9’s record bag.
DJ MITSU – ‘NEGATIVE ION’ (SA-RA REMIX) Planet Groove Japan 2004
Where did you first hear it?
I was in a record shop in Glasgow called Rub-a-Dub. I was hunting for Sa-ra releases that I’d missed and came across this one.
What was your first reaction to it?
I thought it was ok when I first heard it. But it wasn’t till I got it home that its hugeness struck me.
Why are you playing it tonight?
The beats are pretty twisted, but its one of the funkiest things I ever heard. The bassline is solid force and its got vocoders and Herbie Hancock type synth strings. I’m playing it tonight cos its one of the sickest tracks I’ve heard in the last 5 years. Sick. Sick. Sick.
RECORD NO. 2
FLYING LOTUS – ‘PET MONSTER SHOTGLASS’ (Plug Research) 2006
What does this one make you think of?
This one makes me think of Insect pornography, you know the kind of thing – wasps, bugs and things like that fucking. Its’ a really, squelchy, sticky, chittering tune which takes both dub and hip hop somewhere very strange.
Where’s it from and does it sound like where it’s from?
Flying Lotus is from LA., part of the Coltrane family tree. I think he’s now signed to Warp.
Did it cost a lot?
This track didn’t cost me anything. I met with Lotus in Melbourne, Australia last year, and he passed me the tune then.
RECORD NO. 3
MF DOOM/GHOSTFACE KILLER – ‘I HEAR VOICES’ version 1 & 3
Tell me something you like about the artist?
He wears a mask. Also I just remixed one of his tracks. I like the fact he produces and MCs and his flow is different.
Does it influence your own creative process in anyway?
Yeah, I like to wear masks occassionally myself. He’s also got a good ear for a synth earworm, and there is one big one in this tune. The most important thing I go on when I make a tune is what has unconsciously stuck in my head from listening to other music. Just now synth riffs like this are really contagious to me.
How would you like to see people dance when you play it?
Especially the Ghostface vocal makes me shock out.
