BEST OF 2010 (Musical memories)

Sonic discoveries and random rediscoveries of 2010, which to my ears, has been one of the best years for music in a long, long time.

I went from quietly listening to a lot of Folk in the first half of the year to happily swimming in a sea of rave, courtesy largely of June’s Sonar festival which switched on the speakers and woofahs in my head and introduced me to a new wave of UK bass producers and productions, many of which have been seemingly inspired by Chicago’s Juke sound, the most exciting genre I’ve heard since first hearing Dubstep 6-7 years ago.

This is not so much a chart, as a list of musical memories and favourites of the year… thanks to all involved…x

Vex’d – Remains Of The Day
Inspired largely by my move to Paris, I made this slideshow for Bristol’s Photo Night of the year and this tune seemed to fit the images perfectly.

Caribou – Sun
“Sun, sun, sun, sun, sun…sun, sun, sun, sun, sun.”  My summer in a word.

Crystal Waters – Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless)
7 am in the morning during the last set of Sonar festival, golden Spanish light, me and party crew of the year ( Ida + Steph + Clare and Tom Dodd + Pavan + Gina + Guy + Aidy) . Then…”She wakes up early every morning…” resonates off the massive concrete blocks around us. DJ Mehdi has dropped Gipsy Woman. Happiness pushed up a level.

Guido – MadSax
Many a moment spent singing the timeless Sax melody (largely with Newcity!) and a chance meeting with Guido at Sonar where I snapped him outside on the grass vibin to the beats inside his head.

Pat Benatar – Love Is A Battlefield
Wish I could say this rediscovery was inspired by heart-break, but alas, there was none of that this year. It was August, I was, sitting in my Mum’s car , groggy and somewhat high following a wisdom tooth removal when this came on the radio and sounded like the best thing I’d ever heard.

Dennis Ferrer – Hey Hey – Club Edit
I first heard this last year, whilst I’m in the car listening to Rinse FM. I loved the “I heard you say” vocal so much, that I recorded it in to my phone and played it on loop.

Girl Unit – IRL
2010 was a definitive Night Slugs year with IRL and Wut (below) receiving maximum love and reloadage.

Girl Unit – Wut

Lone – Once In A While
This tune embodies the 90s rave sound that permeated sound systems this year.

Mu-Gen – Fizzdom – Munchi Remix

Subeena came to see me in Paris and played me Munchi. Slightly tipsy on wine, we raved it up in my tiny front room. Pure party music, Moombahton power.

Joy Orbison – Hyph Mngo
Feel good hit of the summer.

LV feat. Okmalumkoolkat – Boomslang
“Boomslang, Boomslang, Boomslang, Boomslang, Boomslang, Boomslang, Boomslang, SNAKE.”

N Sync – Girlfriend
A fine rediscovery courtesy of an amazing Martelo mix

Björk – The Dull Flame Of Desire – Modeselektor’s RMX for girls
Where was I when this first came out in 2008-09. Love.

Noodles – Muzik
As featured on Ministry of Sound’s Adventures in Dubstep And Beyond CD curated by Joe Muggs.

Brandy – I Wanna Be Down – Remix Feat. Queen Latifah, Yoyo & McLyte

Crush tune of the year (back to the 90s).

Andreya Triana – A Town Called Obsolete – Mount Kimbie Remix

Darkstar – Gold

2010, The year that Darkstar went from releasing great dubstep inspired tunes here and there to becoming a full on band with a great, moody, indie inspired album under their belt.

Kingdom – Fogs
I love this vocal SO much.

Glasser – Mirrorage

From one of my favourite albums of the year.

Ramadanman – Tempest

This track and it’s repetitive bounce is seriously addictive. I thought it was Thom Yorke when I first heard it.

James Blake – A Limit to your Love
So simple, yet so so perfect.

Hindi Zahra – Stand Up (Album Version)
One of the few non electronic French artists that I’ve discovered and actually liked since moving to Paris.

Grems ft. Foreign Beggars – Broka Billy / Machine Drum Remix
The year I found Foreign Beggars. Their gigs are like bombs going off in dynamite factories.

Gill Scott Heron & Jamie XX – New York is Killing Me
Oneman dropped this on his Rinse FM show and I sorta went all wobbly. A truly fierce tune. Big up Jamie XX one of the most profoundly talented producers to have come out of the UK in recent years imo.

DJ Rashad – Teknitian (from Bangs & Works Vol.1 – Planet Mu)

DJ Roc – One Blood (from Bangs & Works Vol.1 – Planet Mu)

En Vogue – Don’t Let Go
What could’ve been a shit myspace ad with Florence Welch talking about songs she loves has turned into one of my rediscoveries of the year. She sang, Don’t Let Go in the advert, and ever since I heard it, so did I, badly, pretty much everywhere I went.

Major Lazer – Pon De Floor
Another ear worm, this was another tune that was everywhere this year and definitely helped make their Notting Hill Carnival party with Redbull even more vibin.

Boris Dlugosch – Bangkok – Roska Remix
“Roska Roska Roska Roska,” vivid memories of hearing this at Sonar amidst the “Dingalingalingaling,” of the Dodgems siren.

Ramadanman – Work Them
Part of a wave of Juke inspired tracks to come out of the UK, Ramadanman is one of the long time D.O.T.S compadres who in 2010 finally started to get some of the recognition and hype he deserves.

Grace Jones – Love You To Life – Mala / Digital Mystikz remix
Sexy, dubfulness with a groove. Mala’s collaboration with the true legend that is Grace Jones is undeniably a testament to his own talent.

Africa HiTech – Blen (as heard in D.O.T.S KPER WhatStep? Mix)

Mujava – Pleaze Mugwanti
As championed by Kode9 on his great DJ Kicks Mix + a great last minute 2010 memory of my nephew and cousin shaking their booty’s to this track.

DJ Nate – Poetry , Da Trak Genius E.P (Planet Mu)
Juke at it’s best.

Pariah – Orpheus

Breakage – Vial
